Why we exist.
AMOLDBUSTER — Apollo Environmental Solutions by WeSpiritus — was founded in 2004 by a husband-and-wife team who learned the hard way that the indoor environmental industry was failing the families who needed it most. This is our story, our standards, and the alliances that shape our work.
The story starts in a basement.
In the early 2000s, two professionals working in public and elder care health were running into the same problem over and over again in their careers: families whose homes were making them sick — and a fragmented industry that wasn't built to actually help them.
Then it happened in their own home.
When mold damage took hold in the basement of this husband-and-wife team's personal home, they began searching for the experts who could give them real answers. What they found was eye-opening: experts were few and far between, the information was often inadequate, and the cost of an on-site visit — not even an inspection — started at $1,000 just to have someone knock on the door. No microbial sampling or testing was included.
What were they supposed to do as a family? How were they supposed to help their own home and their own children?
"We realized that if this was happening to us — two health professionals with the knowledge and resources to navigate the system — it was happening to thousands of other families with even fewer resources to fall back on."
That experience became the foundation of Apollo Environmental Solutions. WeSpiritus was established in 2004 with a dual purpose: provide businesses and institutions with innovative solutions for their environmental needs, and provide the employees doing that work with a company they could believe in.
As the years progressed, demand for individual residential support grew rapidly. Homeowners and renters were calling, looking for the same help the founders had needed for themselves. That's how the residential division was born — with a focus on real solutions, actual data, and pricing that put help within reach of the people who needed it.
Today, AMOLDBUSTER serves clients across the Mid-Atlantic on-site and nationwide via remote consultation. We've helped hundreds of families and businesses across Maryland, DC, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and beyond — combining modern green building principles with cutting-edge environmental science.
We are a nationwide Benefit Corporation. The mission that started in one basement now serves families across the country.
Two decades of indoor environmental work
From a single basement in Maryland to nationwide consultation, here's the path AES has walked.
WeSpiritus is founded
Two public and elder care health professionals create WeSpiritus after experiencing firsthand the gaps in the indoor environmental industry. Apollo Environmental Solutions launches as its environmental services arm.
Residential division established
In response to growing demand from homeowners and renters, AES launches its dedicated residential division — bringing commercial-grade environmental science into family-scale projects across the Mid-Atlantic.
NORMI & HBIA partnerships
AES formalizes alliances with the National Organization of Remediators and Mold Inspectors (NORMI) and the Healthy Building Institute of America (HBIA) — aligning our practice with national standards and continuing education.
CIRS & biotoxin specialization
AMOLDBUSTER becomes one of the few inspection companies in the nation specializing in CIRS, MCAS, and biotoxin-related assessments — partnering directly with functional medicine practitioners around the country.
Pandemic response & nationwide reach
With the worldwide pandemic raising public awareness of indoor air quality, AES extends nationwide remote consultation services. The Benefit Corporation designation is established to formalize our mission orientation.
Healthier Homes. Healthier Families.
Today AMOLDBUSTER serves families and institutions across the Mid-Atlantic on-site and all 50 states via virtual consultation. Our mission — the one that started in a single basement — now serves thousands.
Three principles guide every engagement
They're not slogans. They're operating rules — the things we will and won't do no matter what the client, the contractor, or the budget says.
The science leads
We follow the data, the lab results, and the published research — not industry shortcuts, not vendor relationships, not what's most profitable. If the science says we don't need to do something, we don't do it. If it says we do, we say so plainly.
The person matters most
The building is the input. The person inside is the output. Every recommendation we make starts with the question: how does this affect the actual humans living, working, or learning in this space?
Education is part of the work
Every AMOLDBUSTER engagement includes the education to understand what we found, why it matters, and how to maintain a healthy environment going forward. We're not selling a product. We're transferring knowledge.
Our alliance partners
AES is part of two national organizations that set the standards for our industry. These aren't logos on a wall — they're the bodies we draw our protocols from, contribute back to, and hold ourselves accountable to.
The national standards body for healthy building science. HBIA connects practitioners, researchers, and clinicians around a shared framework: that buildings have measurable effects on human health, and those effects can be designed, measured, and improved.
hbiatoday.comNORMI is the largest national certifying body for mold inspection and remediation. Their training and certification standards ensure that AES practitioners stay current with evolving best practices, regulatory changes, and emerging research in microbial assessment.
normi.org“We don't just inspect buildings — we help people reclaim their health, their homes, and their lives.”
You're not the first family to face this. We've been doing this for 22 years.
Whatever situation brought you here — symptoms you can't explain, a home that doesn't feel right, a clinician asking for environmental data, or a property concern you need help thinking through — let's start the conversation.
