Why Some People Get Sick from Mold and Others Don't — Understanding CIRS

"My spouse lives in the same house and feels fine. Why am I the only one getting sick?"
 
After more than two decades inspecting homes, offices, and schools for the people who get sick from them, this is the single most common question I hear. And it has one of the cleanest answers in environmental medicine.
 
You and your spouse are NOT having the same exposure — biologically speaking. Roughly 1 in 4 people are born with a genetic profile that prevents their immune system from clearing biotoxins. Same air. Same room. Same building. Completely different outcome inside the body.
 
What CIRS Actually Is
CIRS stands for Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome. It is a multi-system illness that develops after exposure to environmental biotoxins — most often the microbial fragments and mycotoxins produced inside water-damaged buildings. It is recognized in functional medicine, has measurable lab biomarkers, and follows a published clinical protocol for diagnosis and treatment.

If You're in the Susceptible 25%
Your immune system's "alarm" goes off when biotoxins enter your body — but the part that's supposed to come tag and remove them never shows up. The toxin stays. The alarm keeps ringing. Inflammation spreads from cell to cell, damages your immune system itself, and eventually affects almost every system in the body — including the brain. This is when patients start hearing words like fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, headaches, light sensitivity, sinus problems, weight changes, anxiety, "POTS," "fibromyalgia," and a dozen other diagnoses that never quite fit.

If You're in the Non-Susceptible 75%
Your immune system tags the biotoxin, binds it, and your body removes it through normal elimination. You feel a little off and then you're fine.
 
But — and this is important — being in the 75% is not a guarantee. Constant exposure to a water- damaged building can overwhelm anyone's system over time. We see formerly "non-reactive" family members become symptomatic after years of exposure. The building wins eventually if it's sick enough.
 
How to Tell If This Might Be You
There is no single symptom that proves CIRS. There is a pattern. The pattern usually looks like:
 
     You feel measurably worse in one specific building (home, office, school, vehicle) and better when you leave it.
          You've collected three or more diagnoses that don't fully explain how you feel.
          You've been told your bloodwork is "normal" while you feel anything but.
     You can trace the start of symptoms to a water event — a leak, a flood, a slow plumbing problem, a humid basement, a roof issue.
          Other people in the same building have unexplained health complaints, even if they're different
from yours.
 
If two or more of those describe you, the building deserves an investigation. Not a real-estate inspection. Not a quick visual mold check. A biotoxin-informed indoor environmental assessment.
