First, the part most firms will not tell you

AMOLDBUSTER does not perform mold assessments in the District of Columbia. Not on-site, and not virtually. The District licenses residential indoor mold assessment through the Department of Energy and Environment, and we do not hold a DOEE license. We will not take that work, and we will not describe ourselves as licensed where we are not.

Under District law, where indoor mold growth reaches ten square feet or more, assessment and remediation must be performed or supervised by a DOEE-licensed professional. A directory of licensed mold professionals is published by DOEE at doee.dc.gov. We will point you there and we take no fee for doing so.

What we can do for you in Washington is guidance — and for a lot of people, that turns out to be the part they actually needed.

Why mold shows up in Washington

Washington’s rowhouse neighborhoods — Capitol Hill, Georgetown, Columbia Heights, Petworth and beyond — are built largely of historic brick, share party walls, and very often include English (below-grade) basement units. Those garden-level spaces are frequently rented, and being partly below grade, they are usually the first place in a rowhouse where moisture and mold show up.

The District’s humid summers, century-old construction, and dense urban lots that shed water toward foundations all feed the problem — often out of sight behind plaster and under floors. Understanding the mechanism matters, because a report that names a species without explaining where the water is coming from has told you very little.

Read the report you already have

If a DC assessor has already sampled your home, we will read their report independently and tell you what it does and does not establish — including whether an outdoor control was taken, without which indoor spore counts cannot be meaningfully interpreted. We have no relationship with the firm that wrote it and no stake in the answer.

Review a remediation proposal before you sign

We do not perform remediation, which is exactly why our read on a scope of work or a contractor’s quote is worth having. We will tell you whether the plan addresses the moisture source or only the visible growth.

Help you decide what to ask for

Before you hire a DOEE-licensed assessor, we will help you work out what should be sampled, where, and why — so you are commissioning the right work rather than paying to find out.

Biotoxin and CIRS-literate consultation

For clients with CIRS, MCAS, Lyme, or immune compromise, we work in the language your clinician is using. We are not physicians and we do not diagnose, treat, or interpret clinical laboratory results — we describe buildings, and your clinician decides what that means for you.

Relocation and safe-home guidance

If you are leaving a building that is making you unwell, or evaluating the next one, we advise on what to look for and what to rule out — wherever in the country you are moving.

Guidance is delivered by telephone, by video, or as a detailed written response — the same fee either way, because some people would rather read than talk.
